Menorca boat maintenance course faces ministry test

Menorca’s proposed boat maintenance course faces its first test: Spain’s Ministry of Education, Vocational Training and Sport is assessing whether a new higher vocational qualification could join the training system. The Centro del Mar de Menorca brought the plan to a meeting with the ministry’s vocational training director-general, María Paz Sánches, on Wednesday, 28 October 2026. The course would focus on managing and maintaining leisure boats.

Centre director Beatriz Méndez presented the plan, with regional education minister Antoni Vera also at the meeting. It would build on existing nautical studies and could cover propulsion, electrical and electronic systems, energy management, hydraulics, composite materials, boat carpentry, air conditioning and the organisation of maintenance work.

The National Reference Centre for Nautical Training says students and companies want better-qualified workers who can diagnose problems and plan maintenance. The centre has checked the proposal with training centres and industry representatives.

For now, there is no approved course. The qualification still needs a final name, formal processing by Spain’s central administration, review by the relevant authorities and further technical work before it can be introduced.
