Mallorca boat rescues: 116 people in six boats
Mallorca, in Spain’s Balearic Islands: crews rescue or find 116 people from six boats along the coast near Santanyí and south of Cabrera between Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning. Another 17 people intercepted on Tuesday morning bring the 24-hour total in Balearic waters to 133, according to the Spanish government’s delegation in the islands. The six boats were trying to reach the Balearics.
Three boats on Tuesday evening
Spain’s Civil Guard found 12 people on the shore at Cala Barca, in Santanyí. Minutes later, Civil Guard officers and Spain’s maritime rescue service rescued 21 people south of Cabrera. The maritime rescue service then took another 27 people off a boat in the same area.
More rescues overnight
After midnight, the maritime rescue service rescued 15 people south of Cabrera. Civil Guard officers later found 12 people on the shore at Cala Galiota, also in Santanyí. On Wednesday morning, crews found another 29 people on the coast near Santanyí.
So far this year, 6,541 migrants have arrived in the Balearic Islands aboard more than 350 boats, according to a Europa Press count based on government figures.
