Formentera's old boathouses face new repair rules

On the island of Formentera, protected boathouses face new repair rules aimed at stopping them from deteriorating without changing their character. Formentera Island Council put forward the proposal on 27 October. The boathouses, known as varaderos, are linked to traditional fishing and are protected as Assets of Cultural Interest.

The draft sets out who can seek permission for repairs. Those named as users in the boathouses’ protection records can apply, as can their descendants if a named user has died or is unable to act. Someone authorised in writing by a named user can also apply. Applications would go to the island council through a building-permit procedure that does not require a technical project, or an equivalent process.

Only restoration, preservation and work to stabilise the structures would be allowed. Each boathouse would have to keep its distinctive features. The proposal favours traditionally used timber, joining methods and reed roofs, while limiting industrial materials and additions that change a boathouse’s structure or appearance.

The rules are intended to apply while a special protection plan and the boathouses’ coastal-law concessions are being processed.
