Firefighters recover the body of a man aged 60 to 70 from the sea 20 to 30 metres off Cala en Brut, near Ciutadella on Menorca, as storm Adam hits on Monday afternoon. He is wearing only swimwear. The emergency call comes in at about 18.00, on a day when the 112 emergency service issues yellow and orange warnings for rain and thunderstorms on the island.

Local police alert the Guardia Civil and the Menorca fire service. Firefighters reach the body in a rigid inflatable boat and take it to Ciutadella’s old harbour. Sources familiar with the rescue say the sea was already in poor condition when the man went into the water.

He has no identity documents, and no one matching his description has been reported missing. Investigators are checking tourist accommodation in the area because they believe he may have lived on Menorca or been on holiday there.

The Guardia Civil expects an autopsy on Wednesday. It may help identify the man and establish whether he drowned or suffered a medical problem.
