Mallorca: bone marrow donor registrations jump to 545
Across the Balearics, 545 people joined the bone marrow donor register in 2025, up from 44 in 2023. The islands now have 7,609 registered bone marrow donors. On Saturday, World Bone Marrow Donor Day puts the focus on donations that can help people with acute leukaemia, lymphoma and multiple myeloma.
The Balearic Health Ministry credits stronger information for potential donors and awareness campaigns run by hospitals and the Blood and Tissue Bank. It says hospital teams and the bank have taken on an increasingly important role in encouraging registrations.
92 transplants in Balearic hospitals
Hospitals across the islands carried out 92 bone marrow transplants in 2025. Palma's University Hospital Son Espases performed 78, while University Hospital Son Llàtzer carried out 14.
Son Espases completed 17 more transplants than in the previous year, a rise of 28 per cent.
More transplants using donor cells
The sharpest rise came in allogeneic transplants, which use cells from a compatible donor, either a relative or someone unrelated to the patient. These procedures rose from 17 to 38 cases, an increase of more than 120 per cent, and now account for almost half of the work.
Transplants using unrelated donors saw the biggest jump, climbing from 9 to 27 cases — up 200 per cent.
