Palma gains 27 bone marrow donors in UME drive

Twenty-seven people in Palma became new bone marrow donors on Wednesday during a UME campaign at the Mallorca Cathedral viewpoint. Spain’s Military Emergencies Unit, known as the UME, ran the UMEdula event with the Balearic Government, Palma City Council and the Council of Mallorca. Held from 10.00 to 18.00, it gave people information on becoming a donor and allowed those interested to begin the process.

Eight hours on exercise bikes

The main event was an eight-hour exercise-bike marathon, split into 30-minute sessions led by instructors. The UME also staged dog displays and showed its equipment.

A blood-donation bus stood beside Mallorca Cathedral from 09.30 to 19.30. The National Transplant Organisation and regional blood, tissue and cell centres supported the campaign.

Drive reaches 11 Spanish cities

UMEdula was held for World Bone Marrow Donor Day, marked on 22 September. This year it reached 11 Spanish cities, including Palma, and brought in 1,723 new bone marrow donors nationwide — almost twice last year’s total.

Separately, 77 trainees from the 47th basic training course for local police decided to become donors after an earlier awareness session organised through the Balearic School of Public Administration, EBAP.
