Mallorca's Palma Born terraces shut; €30,000 feared

Restaurants on the Passeig del Born in Palma, Mallorca, must take down their terraces from 19.30 on Wednesday 26 August for a public outdoor dinner. They will be limited to indoor service, and some may close for several hours. Businesses on the street fear losing between €20,000 and €30,000 in takings that evening.

Juanmi Ferrer, president of CAEB Restauración Mallorca and the owner of a Born restaurant, has rejected the move. He says the sopar a la fresca — a popular communal dinner — could go ahead while terraces remain open.

The order to remove the terraces came from the National Police, according to Ferrer. He said he expected no incidents or uncivil behaviour towards terrace customers, and criticised what he called a pointless clash between Palma City Council, the National Police and the Government Delegation.

Ferrer said the disruption comes at the end of an August that has already been weak for the area’s restaurants. For the Born venues, the outdoor trade will be gone for the evening.
