Mallorca breastfeeding group takes on formula milk pressure

Mallorca mothers should be able to breastfeed in public without commercial pressure over formula milk, a local group says. On Sunday, the Asociación Balear a Amamantamiento Materno will bring that demand to a breastfeeding festival at Parc de la Mar in Palma, Mallorca, for World Breastfeeding Week.

The association wants safe, respectful places for breastfeeding mothers in their communities, in healthcare and at work. It is also calling for better paid maternity leave and flexible working measures so mothers can combine work and childcare without being penalised.

Sunday’s festival will have workshops, family support groups, children’s entertainment, face painting and a prize draw. The association will read a manifesto and set up a table for swapping second-hand breastfeeding books, equipment and clothes for babies aged 0 to 2, all in good condition. Breastfeeding should not leave mothers isolated or facing obstacle after obstacle, it says.
