Mallorca: man threatens to jump from Playa de Palma bridge
A man hangs halfway over the railing of a motorway bridge in Playa de Palma, Mallorca, and threatens to jump unless police return his belongings. Officers pull him to safety and arrest him after he throws punches and kicks at them. The encounter takes place early last Saturday, the Spanish National Police say.
Officers had spotted the man and another man walking across the bridge with large bags. Inside were numerous items of clothing from international brands, still bearing labels and security tags. Police also found a gemstone-set signet ring and a gold bracelet on one of the men.
Neither man could explain where the clothes came from, so officers tried to seize them on suspicion that they had been stolen. One man then threatened and insulted the officers before lowering himself partway over the railing. Police arrested him on suspicion of theft and assaulting officers.
