Palma staff board blocks bullying condemnation

Palma’s Son Espases University Hospital staff board has failed to approve a written condemnation of alleged workplace bullying reported by former communications chief Sabrina Vidal. The special meeting on Monday, called by nursing union Satse, did not secure the majority needed for the statement. Hospital manager Cristina Granados did not attend.

The Balearic Health Service, IBSalut, had already said it would not be present. Union sources said it argued that it could not assess a case with no complaint filed through the official channels, and involving someone who no longer works at the hospital.

Satse had wanted staff representatives to ask Granados for an explanation. That could not happen in her absence, while the proposed condemnation of Vidal’s account also fell short of support.

The union is now calling for guidance on how to handle future workplace bullying cases and a review of existing procedures. It has also asked IBSalut to check whether Vidal reported the alleged situation by email to any of her superiors.

Satse believes such an email could show that hospital management knew about the situation. But without backing from the staff board, the union accepts that an internal investigation will be difficult. “The system has failed completely,” it said.
