On Mallorca, in Spain’s Balearic Islands, a proposed ban on burkas and niqabs in public spaces could bring fines of up to €30,000 for repeat breaches. The Balearic Parliament in Palma, Mallorca, is expected to approve the Vox bill on Tuesday. It would then go to Spain’s Congress of Deputies for final approval.

Vox wants the ban to cover all public spaces across the Balearic Islands. The proposed fines would also apply to anyone who makes a minor or a woman under their guardianship wear a burka or niqab. Someone who forces, intimidates or coerces a woman into wearing one could face up to four years in prison. The bill also proposes expelling foreign nationals who repeatedly breach the ban.

The People’s Party and Vox are expected to back the bill. Both parties supported an earlier vote to take it forward, while parties on the left opposed it. Tuesday’s vote would not make the ban law: Congress must still approve the proposed changes to the Criminal Code and other laws.
