Balearic businesses: 60 handovers to keep firms open

Responsible for this content: Frank Menze

Around 60 businesses across the Balearic Islands are going through a handover, with about 20 in the final stages. The Balearic Ministry of Enterprise, Self-Employment and Energy announced the figures on Thursday, 22 October 2026, in Palma, Mallorca. It wants to stop viable businesses closing when their owners retire or change careers, and to protect jobs.

Finding someone to take over

The IBRelleu programme connects owners who want to pass on a viable business with entrepreneurs looking for one to run. The ministry says buying a business that is already operating is easier than starting from scratch.

The Balearic Islands Regional Development Agency provides free support. It values businesses, posts sale listings and advises during negotiations. It also helps with sale documents and information about financing.

Sixteen handovers completed

Two years after the programme began, the agency has helped more than 360 users. It has valued more than 80 businesses and supported negotiations involving more than 90. Sixteen handovers are complete.

Businesses seeking a new owner can request a sticker with a QR code linking to details of the company and its sale terms. The agency also works with around 20 local councils to handle enquiries from across the islands.
