Balearics business start-ups fall 6.5% in August
Business start-ups across the Balearics fell 6.5% in August compared with the same month in 2025. The islands were one of four Spanish regions where fewer new commercial companies were formed. The figures come from the monthly commercial statistics published by the Colegio de Registradores.
The drop on the Balearics contrasts with Spain as a whole, where 7,582 new companies were created in August — 6% more than the 7,156 recorded a year earlier. Nationwide, company formation has now risen for three consecutive months after falls in April and May.
Madrid and Catalonia accounted for almost 40% of all new companies set up in Spain during August. Andalusia and the Valencian Community each passed 1,000 new firms.
Cantabria posted the biggest increase, at 63.5%, followed by Asturias on 49.4%, Murcia on 38.1% and La Rioja on 27.3%. Navarra, Catalonia and Castile and León also recorded declines alongside the Balearics.
Capital increases fall too
Companies raising capital also saw activity fall across Spain in August, down 5.1% after a 0.6% decrease in July. The report said the figures still show substantial operations aimed at strengthening companies' financing and capital base, but point to a moderating trend.
Madrid recorded 528 capital increases, down 7.4% year on year. Catalonia had 449, a fall of 10.2%. The Balearics were among the territories reporting the sharpest drops.
