Mallorca sustainability pact row: Cabrer attacks PSIB

A row over Mallorca’s sustainability pact broke out in Parliament in Palma on Tuesday, when regional minister Catalina Cabrer called the PSIB “angry” and told the party to rejoin it. Socialist MP Llorenç Pou said the pact had failed to deliver the difficult, bold measures it was created to drive. He also criticised the refusal to allow the pact’s director-general to appear before Parliament.

The Balearic Sustainability Pact, known in Spanish as the Pacto por la Sostenibilidad, is meant to push forward measures across the islands. Cabrer hit back by describing the PSIB as a party adrift and accused it of taking its lead from Madrid.

Tourism measures at the centre of the clash

Cabrer defended the government’s approach to curbing and reshaping tourism. She pointed to caps on cruise ships, action against illegal accommodation offers, vehicle restrictions and a fall in the supply of tourist housing.

She said the government was meeting its targets despite the opposition. Cabrer also referred to Sunday’s demonstrations in Palma and Eivissa, calling them a public outcry, while accusing the PSIB of wanting ever more growth.

Migration regularisation dispute

In a separate parliamentary exchange, Cabrer said the regularisation process for migrants had created a pull factor and increased unemployment in the Balearic Islands.

PSIB MP Carles Bona asked whether she agreed with employers’ organisations that support the regularisation. Cabrer replied that gaining regular status does not automatically mean getting a job.
