Cabrera protection plan wins unanimous backing

More of the Cabrera Archipelago National Park could receive the highest level of protection under a plan backed unanimously by the Balearic Parliament’s Economy Committee in Palma on Thursday.

The committee approved a PP motion calling for stronger protection across the maritime-terrestrial national park, alongside a new governing plan. It asks for more maximum-protection areas within the park’s existing boundaries, guided by the best available scientific knowledge.

The motion also urges Spain’s central government to rethink the stance taken by representatives of the Ministry for Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge and the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food on the park’s governing board.

It calls on them to work actively with the Balearic Government to complete and approve the new management plan. Lawmakers also ask the Spanish government to respect the autonomous community’s management powers over the national park, strengthen cooperation between institutions and avoid moves that could delay environmental conservation measures.
