Calvià faces protests over a delayed jobs deal

A delayed workplace agreement in Calvià, Mallorca, could trigger protests after union UGT warned it may call mobilisation. The warning came on Friday, 18 September, as the local socialist PSIB party accused the PP-Vox town hall of failing to listen to workers and local people.

PSIB spokeswoman Nati Francés said the council was becoming more distant from the public. She said being close to people meant listening, responding and finding solutions.

Lifeguard strike and police union complaint

The party pointed to a lifeguard strike called in August after workers complained about their treatment by the town hall. They sought better working conditions and improvements to the service, citing faults at lookout towers and in emergency communications.

PSIB said the municipal government had labelled the strike call irresponsible, a response the party says showed it could not resolve the dispute through talks.

SPPME-Baleares, the police union, has also complained that talks on a new agreement for civil servants have gone on for more than two years without a sufficiently detailed overall financial offer.

Row over local investment plans

PSIB says the same lack of dialogue affects people living in Calvià. It accuses the council of pushing ahead with investments and projects without effective local participation before decisions are made.

Socialist mayoral candidate Alfonso Rodríguez said he would open a new period of closer contact, participation and accountability after the next municipal elections. He said Calvià should again have a town hall that listens before deciding and answers to local people.
