Mallorca’s Calvià joins eight-city Europe tourism final

Calvià on Mallorca and Eivissa on Ibiza are among eight places still in the race to become European Capital of Tourism 2027. The two municipalities will put their cases to a European jury in Brussels on 18 and 19 November, Calvià Town Hall said.

They were picked from 40 towns and cities in 17 countries, all with populations between 25,000 and 100,000. The remaining finalists are Calais in France, Geestland in Germany, Nova Gorica in Slovenia, Sandanski in Bulgaria, Selçuk in Turkey and Zadar in Croatia.

What put Calvià in the running

The European Commission assessed candidates on innovative work in sustainability, accessibility and digitalisation, as well as support for cultural heritage, creativity and local talent.

For Calvià, the judges highlighted protection of Posidonia fields and winter beach regeneration. They also pointed to Puig de sa Morisca Archaeological Park as an example of protecting nature alongside historic heritage.

Mayor Juan Antonio Amengual said reaching the final eight already marked a major success for Calvià, citing recognition of the municipality’s transformation and its social, economic and environmental sustainability work.
