Calvià and Eivissa chase 2027 tourism title

Calvià and Eivissa have reached the final 16 for the European Capital of Tourism 2027 title. Their delegations will take their plans to Brussels on 18 and 19 November, when a European jury will choose two winners.

The Balearic municipalities are in the category for places with 25,000 to 100,000 inhabitants. They face Calais, Geestland, Nova Gorica, Sandanski, Selçuk and Zadar after 40 applications from 17 countries.

The European Commission has doubled the number of finalists in each category from four to eight. It said several candidates were level in the assessment and the entries were particularly strong.

An independent panel examined how municipalities handle sustainability, accessibility and digitalisation, as well as support for cultural heritage, creativity and local talent. The contest brings together two former awards — European Capital and Green Pioneer of Smart Tourism — under one new title.

Eight larger cities are also in the running, making 16 finalists altogether. After the Brussels presentations, the two places that will hold the 2027 title will be announced.
