Mallorca’s Calvià reaches European tourism final
Calvià on Mallorca is one of eight finalists for the 2027 European Capital of Tourism title: its bid puts protected beaches and the removal of old hotels at the centre of the case. On 21 October, the council says its delegation has met three European commissioners in Strasbourg. It will make its final pitch to a jury in Brussels on 18 and 19 November.
The pressures Calvià raised
The delegation told commissioners Dubravka Šuica, Jessika Roswall and Magnus Brunner that island resorts depend on air and sea links while having limited land. It also pointed to pressure on infrastructure and public services.
The council raised another obstacle: the paperwork involved in planning projects, seeking European funding and putting changes into practice. It wants simpler procedures without losing transparency or oversight.
Beaches, hotels and the final pitch
Calvià’s bid highlights the protection of posidonia seagrass beds and the natural recovery of its beaches in winter. The council also points to its purchase and demolition of the Hotel Teix in Magaluf and the Hostal Colón in Peguera, alongside work to regenerate Torrenova and reclaim public space. Sensors and data analysis are part of its plan to improve how the resort is managed.
Calvià made the final eight from 40 applications across 17 countries. Eivissa is also on the shortlist. The Brussels presentation is the last stage of the selection process.
