Mallorca's Calvià takes phone dramas and AI films to London
Mallorca's municipality of Calvià is taking two film festivals to London's World Travel Market this week: one for short phone dramas, the other for films made with artificial intelligence. The town council says Mayor Juan Antonio Amengual is among the delegation. It will also promote Magaluf's wetland and Calvià's bid for the 2027 European Capital of Tourism title.
Two festivals, from Magaluf to London
Vertifest Magaluf runs on 24 and 25 November. It is the Balearic Islands' first festival for vertical series — stories made to watch on a phone, with episodes of about two minutes. The programme includes meetings and sessions for film professionals.
The AI Movie Awards, a festival for films made with artificial intelligence, began in Magaluf last April. It moves to London on 7 and 8 November, then returns to Magaluf on 26 and 27 March.
A tourism bid and a protected wetland
Calvià is one of eight finalists for the 2027 European Capital of Tourism title in the category for municipalities with 25,000 to 100,000 inhabitants. It will present its bid to a European jury in Brussels on 18 and 19 November. In London, the delegation also plans meetings with tour operator TUI, the Association of British Travel Agents and Jet2.
The council will also draw attention to Magaluf's wetland, a protected natural area of about nine hectares. It is designated a Critical Biological Area and is home to protected plants found only in the region. A documentary about the wetland is due to premiere in the first weeks of next year.
