Mallorca: Calvià housing could cost €1,400 a month
In Calvià on Mallorca, a two-bedroom home could cost around €1,400 a month under a council housing plan, the local Socialist party (PSOE) warns. On 8 November 2026, the party criticised plans to give private developers the right to use council land for 75 years while presenting the homes as affordable.
How the costs add up
At the planned maximum prices, a two-bedroom home with parking and a small storage room could cost more than €1,200 a month, according to the PSOE. Maintenance and shared-area charges could add up to 15%. On a rent of €1,200, that would mean another €180 a month.
Fewer homes for larger families
The party also objects to the planned mix of homes: nearly 60% would have one bedroom, while only about 6% would have three. It points to 99 council-funded protected homes built in Santa Ponça, Mallorca, during former mayor Alfonso Rodríguez’s term. Five had one bedroom.
PSOE spokeswoman Nati Francés says the council or the Balearic Islands government should build and manage the new homes publicly, using the income to maintain and expand public housing. Rodríguez, now the Socialist candidate for mayor, argues that Calvià should keep control of its land rather than leave the homes in private hands.
