Mallorca burglaries: 18 homes and half a million in loot
Burglars hit 18 homes in Calvià, Mallorca, over the summer, taking goods valued at around half a million euros. The Civil Guard says on 5 November that it has arrested five suspects from a gang based in Toledo. A court in Illescas, Toledo, has ordered four of them held in pre-trial custody.
How the homes were targeted
The break-ins took place in Santa Ponça, Sol de Mallorca and Costa d'en Blanes. Investigators say the suspects made trips to Mallorca, used forged documents and tried to blend in with the many visitors.
The group allegedly tracked victims’ cars with a location device and watched their homes. When the homes were empty in the late afternoon, the burglars forced doors and windows to get in.
Stolen goods found in Toledo
During four searches in Toledo province, officers found items they believe came from homes in Mallorca. Some owners have already recognised their belongings. The finds include bags, suitcases and jewellery. Civil Guard spokesman Paco Molina says the most valuable item is a diamond cross about eight centimetres long, valued at between 200,000 and 300,000 euros.
Officers also seized four firearms, 1,200 marijuana plants, 2,500 perfumes and six high-end cars. The investigation remains open: the Civil Guard is checking whether the suspects are linked to other burglaries on Mallorca and the Spanish mainland.
