Mallorca's Calvià tourism faces two-year pressure check
Calvià, Mallorca, faces a two-year review of visitor numbers, spending and residents’ views as Spain looks for ways to ease pressure on tourist destinations. Spain’s Secretary of State for Tourism, Rosario Sánchez, announced the plan at the World Travel Market in London on 3 November 2026. An agreement with the British travel agents’ association ABTA also covers Benidorm, Lloret de Mar and Seville.
The project will examine how long visitors stay and the environmental impact of tourism. Its findings are intended to help the four destinations plan better, reduce pressure and share tourism’s economic and social benefits more evenly.
Spain also unveiled an international campaign, “Spain, a Country for All”, to promote accessible travel. The Spanish tourism agency Turespaña is working on it with Fundación ONCE and accessibility experts.
The UK remains Spain’s biggest source of tourists. From January to August 2026, 13.9 million visitors came from the UK, up 5.4% on the same period a year earlier. Their spending reached €17,251 million, an increase of 4.4%.
