Ibiza clears three woodland camps over wildfire risk

Police in Sant Antoni de Portmany, Ibiza, have cleared three camps in wooded areas in recent weeks. The sites were on the slopes of Sa Talaia de Sant Antoni, near the boundary with Sant Josep, and close to Sa Serra. The council says the camps raise particular wildfire concerns during summer.

Patrols target hard-to-reach sites

The Local Police are continuing a prevention operation drawn up in May and June, shortly before the summer season began. Officers are watching places considered likely to be used for camps, caravans, motorhomes or other vehicles being used permanently as homes.

Their checks cover tracks and rural land, woodland, coastal areas and other difficult-to-reach locations.

41 penalties issued this year

Since the operation began, police have carried out checks at different points across the municipality. They have issued 41 penalties this year linked to camping, motorhomes, caravans and camps.

Sant Antoni de Portmany Council says cooking and electricity-generating equipment, along with stored belongings and materials, add to the danger in the summer heat. Any incident could start a fire that spreads quickly through the natural surroundings.
