Ibiza homes ring-fenced for five-year residents

Homes at Can Escandell on Ibiza will go only to people who have lived on the island for at least five years, the Balearic Government says. Spokesman Antoni Costa gave the assurance in Palma on Friday, 18 September, after a Council of Government meeting. It directly clashes with Housing Minister Isabel Rodríguez, who had said local residents would not get priority in the development.

Costa said Article 70.8 of the Housing Law requires at least five years’ residence for homes carrying any form of legal protection. Can Escandell is therefore not for people from outside Ibiza, he said.

He also accused Rodríguez of having little understanding of the housing situation in the Balearic Islands.

Government accepts Grandchildren Law vote halt

Costa also addressed the provisional suspension of a vote involving beneficiaries of the so-called Grandchildren Law. The Balearic Government respects the Supreme Court’s decision, he said.

He acknowledged that the number of additional registrations has risen substantially. If the court considers the suspension necessary, Costa said, the Government will not oppose it.
