At Can Misses Hospital on Ibiza, in Spain’s Balearic Islands, patients see a medical professional 11 minutes after arriving at A&E, the region’s health minister says. Manuela García gave the figure on 27 October 2026 after Vox politician Patricia de las Heras asked what was being done to cut waiting times. The 11 minutes covers the time to first contact, not the time it takes to resolve a case.

García says the average time to resolve a case has fallen from 9.2 to 6.5 hours. At the start of the legislative term, the department had 24 staff despite having 32 authorised posts, and staff were leaving steadily, she said.

The Balearic Islands government has since increased staffing by 38.5%, according to García. She cited 34 doctors, including new hires and extra cover for on-call shifts. The government is also strengthening primary care, where García says most urgent cases can be treated.
