Can Rova children: Santa Eulària gets second warning

The Defensor del Pueblo has sent Santa Eulària council on Ibiza a second demand for information about children from the Can Rova settlement. The move, made on 15 September, follows the council’s failure to answer an earlier request about the children’s situation when the eviction took place.

The Ombudsman’s office said it regretted the delay in establishing the circumstances in which the children were living at the time of the eviction. It said the council has a legal duty to cooperate and has now been reminded of that duty for a second time.

Former senator Juanjo Ferrer, of the Eivissa i Formentera al Senat coalition, brought the case to Ombudsman Ángel Gabilondo a year ago. He said the rights of several children living in Can Rova 2 were facing an extremely serious situation.

Ferrer accused Santa Eulària’s social services of failing to put effective housing, social or financial support in place, leaving the families in a critical position.

Current senator Neus Massanet also criticised what she called the council’s lack of transparency and cooperation. She said Santa Eulària must provide the requested information and regretted what she described as a lack of interest in the protection of children.
