Canary Islands heat alert: 35ºC and Calima dust

The Canary Islands face heat alerts on Tuesday, with temperatures set to exceed 35ºC in some places. Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, La Palma, La Gomera, El Hierro and Tenerife are covered by the warning. Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura also have alerts for Calima, dust suspended in the air.

The State Meteorological Agency, AEMET, expects mainly clear or lightly cloudy skies across the islands. Some low cloud may form along the coast in the morning, while the dust could reach significant levels on the eastern islands.

The heat may linger after dark. AEMET forecasts tropical nights — when temperatures do not fall below 20ºC — across the archipelagos, and says some parts of the Canary Islands could stay above 25ºC overnight.

A moderate north wind is expected in the islands. High pressure is set to keep the weather generally stable on Tuesday.
