Cancer care support for children faces Madrid vote

Families caring for children with cancer or another serious illness could lose proposed improvements to financial and social support. On 14 September, the Spanish Committee of Representatives of Persons with Disabilities (CERMI) called on Spain’s Congress of Deputies in Madrid to keep changes approved by the Senate.

The changes concern CUME, a benefit for families caring for children affected by cancer or another serious illness. CERMI says the Senate’s proposals would give better protection to families whose children need intensive, ongoing care.

The organisation says CUME is vital for parents and carers trying to continue in work while providing direct, continuous care. Without adequate protection, it warns, families can face losing jobs, lower incomes or greater financial insecurity.

CERMI has urged parliamentary groups to back the Senate changes before the final approval of reforms to Spain’s disability and dependency laws. It says the proposals would make CUME better suited to families’ real needs, including when children require specialised care and exceptional family commitment.
