Mallorca cancer run draws 5,700 to Palma streets
Mallorca’s cancer run brings 5,700 people through the streets of Palma, Mallorca, on Sunday, many in pink T-shirts. Called Mallorca En Marcha Contra el Cáncer, the event is organised by the Spanish Association Against Cancer in the Balearic Islands as part of its October programme for World Breast Cancer Day.
A race followed by a walk
The 8-kilometre race begins at 9.30am from Avenida de Antoni Maura, with more than 1,500 runners registered. At 11.30am, more than 5,000 people set off on a 4-kilometre walk. They include 4,200 registered walkers and runners taking part again with friends or family.
Children join in
Children aged 3 to 14 run distances suited to their age, accompanied by the event’s Pink Panther mascot. Each receives a commemorative medal and a wristband.
The association’s ‘Nos lo tomamos a pecho’ campaign focuses on women living with cancer. It calls for them to feel cared for, heard and informed, and to have a say in decisions affecting their care.
