Mallorca care campaign targets 215-day decision wait

For people on Mallorca who need help getting up, washing or eating, the wait for care support can start with a long first step: across the Balearic Islands, the first decision takes 215 days on average. Trade union UGT launches a campaign on Wednesday, 7 October 2026, calling for better care for those people and better conditions for the workers who support them.

Thousands have a right to support

At the end of 2025, more than 38,000 people across the Balearic Islands had a recognised right to a care benefit, according to UGT. About 34,000 were actually receiving one. The union says people and families with care needs cannot wait for an administrative process to finish. It wants decisions made faster and support that meets people’s needs.

Campaign reaches care homes and home services

UGT’s campaign will reach care homes, day centres, home-help services and remote assistance services across the islands. The union says staff face pressure to work quickly, too few colleagues and pay that does not reflect their responsibilities. It also warns that some working conditions may put their health at risk.

UGT is calling for enough staff, continuing training and effective cover when workers are absent. It also wants better pay, stable jobs, protection from risks at work and public services that people can access.
