Spain's care funding rises, but changes lag behind
Spain’s regions have had extra care funding for four months, but people who need help are not seeing all the expected changes: a social services group wants regional leaders to show where the money will go in their 2027 budgets. On Wednesday, 4 November, the Spanish Association of Directors and Managers of Social Services says it will write to the presidents of every autonomous community.
The group warns that, unless the increases appear in regional budgets, it could look as though money intended for care is being kept for other purposes. It says the funding must improve life for people who need care and those who look after them.
The association expects care funding to total 18,900 million euros in 2027. It calculates that the state and the regions will each contribute 7,654.5 million euros, with a further 3,591 million euros coming from people who use care services.
At its congress on Thursday, 5 November, the group will present 18 proposals for using the extra money. They include making decisions on a person’s level of care need through a single procedure, so later changes to support can be made on a clinician’s recommendation without opening another case file. It also wants care homes and day centres to be able to provide services in people’s homes. More than 400 professionals are expected at the congress.
