Three Ibiza care homes await handover amid funding row
Three public care homes on Ibiza, in the Balearic Islands, still await a handover to the Ibiza Island Council. The regional government says it will transfer their management only when the homes have enough resources to keep services and care running without disruption. At the Balearic Parliament on 3 November 2026, Socialist politician Álex Pitaluga asks social welfare minister Sandra Fernández when that will happen. She gives no date.
Pitaluga accuses the government of announcing the handover without the will to see it through. He says council president Vicent Marí should speak up if he does not want to take on the responsibility.
Fernández hits back with a dispute over money. She accuses the previous Socialist government of opening care homes without funding and running up €2.2 million in debts to Social Security. She says it planned just €9 million for the transfer of Ibiza’s three homes, which she argues offered no guarantee for their management.
Fernández says the issue is not who runs the homes, but how they are run. The council’s takeover remains without a date.
