Menorca care homes: PSIB pushes to open 210 places

Menorca has 210 care-home places planned across three homes: the PSIB wants extra Spanish government funding spent first on staff to make them available. The homes are in Maó, Es Castell and Es Migjorn, all on Menorca. On 12 October, the party said island councillor Noemí Gomila would bring the proposal to a full meeting of the Menorca Island Council.

The push comes amid long waits for care. At the end of 2025, nearly 2,500 people across the Balearic Islands were waiting for support through the care system. On Menorca, people waited an average of 272 days to get home help in the second half of that year. The PSIB also points to more than 300 people on a waiting list whose need for care has been recognised; it does not say they are all waiting for a care-home place.

Spain’s government has approved almost 6,200 million euros in extra care funding for 2026 and 2027. The PSIB wants the Balearic government to increase its own spending too, rather than use the state money to replace it.

The proposal also calls for more home-help staff, more hours of help and wider access to the service. It seeks cooperation between the Balearic government, the island council and local councils so people who wish to can stay in their homes. On Mallorca as elsewhere in the Balearics, the party says access to care should not depend on which island or municipality someone lives in.
