Mallorca housing squeeze: a job is not enough

Only 31% of 18- to 34-year-olds live independently without help from their families, according to figures highlighted by Càritas Mallorca. On 7 October, its staff and volunteers stage a performance to make their point: having a job does not, by itself, guarantee a decent life. Called ‘Techo, Tierra y Trabajo’ (‘Roof, Land and Work’), the action marks the World Day for Decent Work.

Buying or renting a home has become harder as prices rise, with speculation also playing a part, the charity says. Many jobs offer too little stability and protection. That combination makes it especially difficult for young people to find a home and build an independent life. The figures cited for the event put the average age of becoming independent at around 30.

Groups involved in the Church for Decent Work initiative have held similar actions in other Spanish provinces. They are calling for changes in public policy and shared responsibility across society, arguing that decent work should bring access to housing, social protection and the chance to live independently.
