Casa 47 opens with 800 affordable homes, minister hits back

Spain’s Casa 47 housing portal has opened with 800 homes offered at affordable rents. In Congress in Madrid on Wednesday, Housing Minister Isabel Rodríguez rejected criticism from Sumar and Podemos, saying it came from a lack of understanding. The government launched the site on Monday and says another 1,500 properties from across Spain will be added soon.

Casa 47 is a company attached to the Housing Ministry. Sumar said the new website did little to tackle Spain’s housing problem, while Podemos called it a mockery.

Minister points to bigger housing plans

Rodríguez said Casa 47 had expropriated 40,000 homes and 2,500 plots from Sareb. She said the land would make way for another 20,000 homes to enter the public housing stock.

She also pointed to the planned Campamento district in Madrid, where 10,000 more homes are due to be built. All of them would be public homes, she said.

Rodríguez then turned her fire on the PP, accusing the party of handing protected homes to councillors and friends in Alicante. Referring to the row over the penthouse linked to Madrid regional president Isabel Díaz Ayuso, she said those dismissing 800 homes as too few might be content with just one.
