Casa 47 housing row: Menorca PSOE accuses PP of U-turn
On the island of Menorca in the Balearic Islands, a row over affordable public rents puts Casa 47 in the spotlight: the PSOE says the PP wants the national housing body to move faster after voting against measures to create and strengthen it. The accusation comes in a statement issued on 1 November 2026.
The socialists say the PP opposed two measures in Congress. Royal Decree 1/2025 included plans to transfer state-owned buildings and land to Sepes, which later became Casa 47. Royal Decree 29/2026 aimed to strengthen the body's legal framework. The PSOE says the PP had also derided Casa 47, which the central government has set up to provide public housing at affordable rents.
Pepe Mercadal, the PSOE's general secretary on Menorca, says Casa 47 should become a national counterpart to Ibavi, the Balearic housing institute. He challenges the PP to show the same urgency over Ibavi's waiting lists, where it has government responsibilities. He also criticises what he calls a blockage in the construction and handover of Ibavi homes, without saying who is responsible.
