Ibiza fire kills man at Casa Lola amid rent claims

A Sunday fire in a makeshift home at Casa Lola in Sant Josep, Ibiza, kills a 48-year-old man. People living on the property say they pay rent. Mayor Vicent Roig said on 28 September that a worker for the owner handles the payments.

Roig says no one at Casa Lola is currently in a vulnerable position, though people there risk falling into one. He accuses the owner’s legal representatives of citing the legal protection against entry into a home to block inspections. He says this creates insecurity for other neighbours.

The council asked the owner for access to inspect the property on 10 August. After the request was refused, it applied to a court for permission to enter. Roig did not say whether the court had ruled.

Local police patrol the area daily, Roig says. He also says the Civil Guard lacks enough resources and wants the State Administration’s Directorate-General to respond to the staffing shortage.
