Casal de Dones workshops in Palma halt for months

The Casal de Dones in Palma is set to lose its regular workshops and community programme for months during a move to the Germanetes building. The Socialist Party of the Balearic Islands (PSIB) raised the alarm on Wednesday, 9 September, saying the interruption threatens the continuity of its programme.

The party says Mallorca Island Council announced the move only last week. Groups affected by the change say none of the community activities already planned for the coming months can take place at Germanetes.

Repairs known for more than a year

Socialist councillor Bea Gamundí accused the council of failing to plan ahead. According to the PSIB, technical reports from May 2025 show the department had known for more than a year about problems at the Casal de Dones caused by rain and building work.

Despite that warning, the party says no alternative site was prepared to keep activities running and the groups that regularly use the centre were not consulted. The island government has acknowledged that it must put a new contract out to tender, with the workshops and community programme suspended in the meantime.

PSIB demands a return timetable

Gamundí said offering a room for meetings does not replace the activities that will stop. She also said the council had processed the purchase of a new site for offices and the Women's Information Centre, but had not set out an alternative or a timetable for the Casal de Dones.

The PSIB has filed questions with the council and wants it to formally call in the associations involved. It is demanding publication of the building project and a realistic schedule, along with guarantees that workshops will resume and staff will keep their jobs.
