Menorca beach hut faces demolition despite protection

Nearly €45,000 to tear down a protected beach hut: Spain’s coastal authority has awarded a demolition contract for Caseta Jaume on Alcalfar beach in Sant Lluís, Menorca. On Thursday 5 November, Menorca’s People’s Party demanded that the Spanish government stop the work. The hut has been on the municipality’s list of protected properties since 2024.

Caseta Jaume is one of Menorca’s casetes de vorera, traditional buildings along the shore. Joan Mesquida, a People’s Party candidate for Congress, said they are part of the island’s fishing heritage. He called the loss of the hut irreversible.

The party has tried to strengthen protection for such buildings through changes to coastal law. Spain’s Senate agreed to consider one of its bills in March 2024, and the Congress of Deputies agreed to consider another on 10 June 2025. Mesquida accused Congress president Armengol of blocking the later bill, saying it made no further progress before the legislature ended.

The Balearic regional government is also working on a coastal law that would protect traditional buildings with historical and cultural value, according to the People’s Party. For Caseta Jaume, the party wants the demolition contract stopped now.
