Alaró repairs Castell road after rockfall

Loose stones and earth had been falling onto the carriageway on the Castell d'Alaró road in Alaró, Mallorca. On 1 September 2026, the council said it had rebuilt 133 square metres of traditional dry-stone walls across three stretches of the vehicle-accessible section.

The walls, known locally as marges, had been damaged by time, weather, erosion and landslips. The work keeps the shape and dimensions of the existing structures and follows the traditional pedra en sec method: local-style stone is fitted without cement or other binding materials.

The repair follows resurfacing work carried out a year ago. The Serra de Tramuntana Consortium of the Council of Mallorca contributed €17,500 towards the €21,000 project, while Alaró Council paid the remaining €3,500.

Before Easter, the council plans to restore further collapsed wall sections, mainly beside the pedestrian path, with work also planned at some points on the road. Mayor Llorenç Perelló said the aim is to improve conditions for people walking and for vehicles while protecting the route’s landscape and heritage.
