Over 1,000 join cat colony march in Palma, Mallorca

More than 1,000 people marched in Palma, Mallorca, on 6 September to demand protection for cat colonies. On Monday, Grupo Mixto-Unidas Podemos submitted a motion calling on Palma City Council to enforce animal welfare rules and carry out its cat colony programme, approved in July 2024.

The party says the turnout shows clear public demand. It argues that Palma does not need new laws, but must meet the duties it already has.

Plan, map and veterinary care

The motion calls for the council to publish the full municipal programme and a report showing how far it has been carried out. It also wants an updated register and map of the city’s cat colonies.

Unidas Podemos is seeking an annual plan for CER — capture, sterilisation and return — with targets, a budget and monitoring measures. The proposal also demands veterinary care, equipment and funding for the colonies’ management.

Carers should have a say

Lucía Muñoz, the group’s spokesperson, said the care of cat colonies must not rest on the personal effort and money of their carers. She said the council must provide veterinary support and the resources needed to comply with the law.

The motion also seeks regular involvement for carers, colony managers and animal protection groups in reviewing and improving the programme. Muñoz said those working with the colonies know their needs first hand and should be included in its follow-up.
