Catalan language at risk in Spain’s election, says minister
Barcelona, Spain: Culture Minister Ernest Urtasun says the 29 November general election could decide whether Spain’s government protects the Catalan language or attacks it. Urtasun, second on the Frente Amplio list in Barcelona, made the warning in an interview with Ara reported by Europa Press on Saturday, 24 October. He says a government formed by the People’s Party (PP) and Vox would target Catalan.
Urtasun points to the Valencian Community, Spain, where he says the PP cut all aid to Escola Valenciana and Acció Cultural Valenciana. He says the two organisations survived thanks to financial support from Spain’s government.
The election has also brought fresh debate over parties to the left of the Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party (PSOE). Urtasun says Podemos must explain its own decisions, but defends a joint ballot bringing together more than 15 organisations across Spain. He also criticises Junts per Catalunya for not taking a clear enough position on the prospect of a change of government.
