Mallorca’s Catalan language festival returns to Esporles
Mallorca’s Esporles hosts the seventh Treu la Llengua language festival on 14 November: organisers want more Catalan at local celebrations. Joves de Mallorca per la Llengua is staging the event with Esporles Town Council for the second year running. The group says music and culture can help people who do not speak Catalan connect with the language.
The festival is part of a wider push for more Catalan music at local festivities. The group has drawn up a list of artists who perform in Catalan to help councils meet their pledge: at least 50 per cent of the music at those events should be in Catalan.
Joves de Mallorca per la Llengua has also promoted an agreement with eight political parties and numerous councils to give Catalan a greater place at festivities and in leisure. It says it will announce the artists for Treu la Llengua soon.
