Mallorca, in Spain’s Balearic Islands, is caught in an election row over Catalan: Culture Minister Ernest Urtasun says the islands’ regional government has targeted the language. Speaking at an event organised by Nueva Economía Forum on Friday, 6 November, he warned that a future government formed by the People’s Party (PP) and Vox would do the same. He also accused the regional government in the Valencian Community of targeting Catalan.

Urtasun criticised a proposal by Cayetana Álvarez de Toledo to end the use of other official languages in Spain’s Congress of Deputies. He challenged the PP’s candidate for Barcelona, Xavier García Albiol, over whether ending the use of Catalan in Congress would be his first move.
