Mallorca: 50 Catalan proposals still unanswered

In Palma, Mallorca, a cultural group says the Balearic government still has not answered 50 proposals to support Catalan, two years after it submitted them. Obra Cultural Balear (OCB) president Antoni Llabrés makes the complaint on 20 October 2026, after attending the third and final general policy debate of the current term.

Llabrés says the government led by Marga Prohens has combined setbacks for Catalan with a failure to act, particularly in helping people arriving in the islands learn and use the language. He points to language measures agreed by the People's Party (PP) and Vox in education and the civil service. Prohens's words last year about protecting the islands' language and culture have produced nothing concrete, the group says.

The 50 proposals were drawn up by experts as priority steps for the Balearic Islands, according to OCB. Llabrés says none has received a reply. With 40 years now passed since the approval of a law to promote Catalan, he is calling for stronger action to protect its place in public life.

He also points to the islands' strong population growth, which Prohens called unsustainable last year. People arriving in the Balearic Islands need enough courses and accessible resources to learn Catalan, Llabrés says. Without them, he warns, their chances of using the language depend too heavily on individual circumstances and social inequality.
