In Palma, Mallorca, the cathedral steps have severe damage: a technical report warns of an imminent risk of collapse in the space beneath the right-hand viewpoint. The report became public on Tuesday of the previous week, eight months after cracks were found in February 2026. On 21 October, the socialist party PSIB asked the Mallorca Island Council what it knows about the risk and whether it plans to act with Palma City Council.

The report says the damage affects both the use and stability of the steps. The cathedral is part of a protected heritage complex, and 1.2 million people visited it in 2025, according to the PSIB. The party says no action was taken to establish the extent of the problems after the cracks appeared.

The PSIB wants to know whether the island council has inspected the steps or received plans to take down and rebuild damaged sections. It is also asking whether the council will work with the city on a timetable for repairs and consider technical or financial support. No council response or repair timetable is given in the report of the party’s request.
