Spain’s autonomous city of Ceuta cannot care for 3,000 migrant children alone: the country’s ombudsman is asking other regions to take some in. Ángel Gabilondo makes the appeal in Madrid on Thursday, 8 October, for children who have remained in Ceuta since the mass arrival on 30 July.

Some are as young as seven, he says. Some ask to return to their families, but he says that is difficult. Gabilondo points to the Spanish constitution’s call for solidarity among the country’s regions.

He fears the crisis could leave a lasting mark on how Ceuta’s communities live together. He says the city must protect safety and keep its services running. He also condemns harassment of organisations that help migrants.
