Ceuta migrant children: Sumar calls in ombudsman
Children who arrived alone in Ceuta after July’s mass arrival remain there as Sumar moves to involve Spain’s ombudsman. The party says PP-led regions are refusing to take in some of the unaccompanied migrant minors. Its congressional spokeswoman, Verónica Martínez Barbero, announced the move in Madrid on Saturday.
Sumar will ask the Defensor del Pueblo — Spain’s ombudsman, led by Ángel Gabilondo — to investigate and act, Martínez Barbero said. She said taking in the children and teenagers is a duty set out in law.
The PP will have to explain its stance to the ombudsman, people across Spain and Ceuta’s population, she said. Sumar says Ceuta’s population has the right to return to everyday life, while everyone arriving in the city has rights. The party says compliance with Spanish and international law is the answer.
