Ceuta crisis: Feijóo backs Vivas at Madrid PP meeting

Ceuta takes centre stage in Madrid on Monday, 28 September: Alberto Núñez Feijóo is gathering the People’s Party leadership to back the city’s president, Juan Jesús Vivas. The meeting will also tackle housing costs and rising prices. Party leaders are due to approve around 20 regional and provincial conferences as they prepare for the 2027 elections.

Party backs Ceuta’s president

Feijóo plans to insist that Ceuta and Melilla remain Spanish and that their status is not open to negotiation. The People’s Party accuses Pedro Sánchez’s government of abandoning Ceuta during the migration crisis and rejects its criticism of Vivas.

Vivas has travelled to Brussels to seek more European Union involvement. He has also written to European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen inviting her to Ceuta, though party sources acknowledge that the invitation would need to come from Spain’s government.

Housing costs and elections

The party will turn to the strain of food prices and housing costs on households. It points to the eviction of Maricarmen, a woman in her eighties who had lived in her Madrid flat for 71 years. Its proposals include faster building permits and tax incentives to help people save for a home.

The leadership is also expected to approve party conferences planned for late October and November. The meetings are intended to refresh regional and provincial teams ahead of the 2027 elections.
